Warren Barguil (Fortuneo-Samsic) was the first attacker at km 6 but he didn’t stay away more than two kilometres as the peloton reacted. Team Sky denied any attacker the possibility to ride away from the peloton before the ascent to the Cormet de Roselend. Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step) was the first to take off in the climb. After he got caught, he managed to react to a later attack by Dani Navarro (Cofidis). David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Edward Ravasi (UAE Team Emirates) and Antwan Tolhoek (LottoNL-Jumbo) accompanied the Spaniard before being rejoined by Alaphilippe and Pierre Rolland (EF Education First). Paola Gianotti’s has recently been riding all the stages of this 2018 Giro d’Italia to raise road cycling safety awareness.
We’ve produced videos simulating the most common mistakes and behaviours that cyclists and car drivers should try to avoid on the road.
These videos have been shown on the Italian National Television RAI 2 TV program, IL PROCESSO ALLA TAPPA, and we’ve also distributed stickers to apply on vehicles saying “IO RISPETTO IL CICLISTA” (I respect the cyclist’s on the road), encouraging people to display it on their cars. The idea of this project was born in conjunction with Marco Cavorso who is the father of Tommaso, a young cycling victim of a road accident which ended his life.

Paola is about to cycle all the Italian Stages of the Giro d’Italia 2018, one day ahead of the official race, to spread road cycling safety awareness all around Italy. See more images here on my FLICKR. She also ride this Giro to remember Alfonsina Strada(16 March 1891 – 13 September 1959) who was an Italian cyclist, and the only woman to have ridden one of cycling’s three major stage races. She started in the Giro d’Italia in 1924 when the organisers mistook her for a man. Newspapers called her The Devil in a dress.[1]  Her racing career included an Italian record which lasted 26 years. She died aged 69 as she propped up her motorcycle after riding to a bicycle race.

I, Fabrizio Malisan @fabulouSport  will be part of her team, where we’ll follow and support Paola Gianotti in her Italian Giro 2018 adventure. Please subscribe to this blog where I’ll give you regular updates on Paola’s progress or press LIKE ON:

Fabio Aru wins in Ivrea – Italian Road Cycling Championships 2017

Very pleased to see the Italian Road Cycling Championships 2017 arriving in my hometown of Ivrea in the province of Turin, Italy. The race started in Asti, went across the Piedmont, through the Canavese area and finished with a 4 laps around Ivrea and up the Serra Morenica hill.

It’s great (for me) to see that this land is becoming more and more considered by the pro riders and the professional cycling event organisers. It offers a variety of terrain perfect for cycling, touring and training, going from undulating landscapes to steeper hills and mountains.

Cycling up the Serra Morenica hill above Ivrea in Piedmont Italy. Many beautiful villages to visit and discover, very characteristic historical and rural architecture, delicious food and lovely welcoming people to meet. This in in image is Nomaglio on the way up to Andrate which dominates the Serra Morenic hill.

There has been a beautiful stage of the Giro d’Italia finishing by the Sanctuary of Oropa, just above the town of Biella, on the Biellese side of the Serra Morenic Hill. The cherry on the cake has been the presence of most Italian top cyclists, and the victory of Fabio Aru, as most of us spectators were hoping.  Vincenzo Nibali was there too, and many other professional cyclists that we usually see on TV when competing in bigger events.

The National Championships is actually a great opportunity to get close to these pro cyclists, to get an autograph or a selfie, and maybe even a few words as they are much more relaxed than in a Giro d’Italia or Tour de France stage.

It was great to see the smile of joy on Aru’s face, an emotional  moment when, on the podium, he dedicated his victory to Michele Scarponi. It’s very touching to see that the Astana Proteam keep images of Scarponi on the Team Bus and that they keep mentioning him, sharing anecdotes & jokes and the good times spent with the late Michele. He was such a great companion and a big loss for the cycling and non-cycling world.

Coming back to Fabio Aru’s victory, on the last lap Dario Cataldo kept a fast pace at the start of the Serra hill climb, to get Fabio in the best position for his winning attack, and it worked to perfection, as the road got steeper ( gradient over 15% above the town of Chiaverano) Fabio went full gas leaving everyone behind. At the top of the climb there is still a fair bit to cycle back down to Borgofranco and then to Ivrea for the finish, but he managed to get a fantastic solo win….well done Fabio Aru!! It’s going to be a promising and very exciting Tour de France 2017 to watch.

Cycling Giro d’Italia 2017 Today’s the day.. #Giro100

It’s been a great Giro, and it’s good to see that the fight for the win is open till the last day.

Only a few seconds separate the Colombian Nairo Quintana of Movistar Team, to Vincenzo Nibali, Thibaud Pinot, Tom Dumoulin and Zakarin all within 1 minute.

Thibaud Pinot showed in the penultimate stage his good condition with energies left in the tank. Will it be the potential surprise of this Giro 2017? Only time will tell.. let’s wait and watch today’s Time Trail where everyone sets Dumoulin as the favourite.
