Cycling Tour Vlog: Rosazza Valle Cervo to Oropa Sanctuary Biella Piedmont Italy @fabulousport

The Biellese region is a fabulous land for cycling, offering several quiet roads to ride. Cycling is a great way to explore and discover these beautiful landscapes of the northern Piedmont region of Italy.
In this video I’m showing you a great climb, with quite a challenging gradient, reaching about 15%, but very rewarding and panoramic.
DCIM100GOPROGOPR1830.JPG

The climb begins once passed Biella, a lovely ride up through the Valle Cervo which is a valley that feels like time has stood still. The ride is very pleasant surrounded by very beautiful characteristic houses and picturesque villages along the river. Just before you get to the town of Rosazza, there’s a left turn on a bridge, then left again towards San Giovanni and Galleria di Rosazza, the tunnel that leads to Oropa on the other side of the mountain. However, whilst you are there, I recommend you cycle all the way to the end of the Cervo Valley, to visit Rosazza and Piedicavallo, both really interesting little villages.

It’s always more exciting to cycle up a hill from one side and descend the other side, as it really feels like travelling further.

The Sanctuary of Oropa has hosted a few Giro d’Italia stage finishes. It’s a great road to climb from the town of Biella, winding it’s way up to the Sanctuary.

————————————————
History:
Archaeological excavations in the Mincio valley include a Bronze Age settlements, some tombs dating to the Iron Age and some findings associated with the Etruscan civilization. A large Celtic necropolis, found in 1984 still partly buried under the current town, would prove the presence of that people from the 4th century AC and the 1st century DC.

The creation of the villages of Valeggio and Borghetto dates to the Lombard rule in northern Italy. The monastery of Santa Maria was founded here, on the Mincio shore, was founded here in the 12th century; later it was a priory of the Knights Templar. The large medieval fortifications which characterize Valeggio (Scaliger castle, the Visconti Bridge and the Serraglio difensive line) were built between the 13th and the 14th centuries. In 1405 Valeggio became part of the Republic of Venice, and subsequently lost its strategic role, becoming an agricultural center and a silkworms trading market.

After the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797, Valeggio was included in the Cisalpine Republic. Later it was part of the Italian Republic (1802-1805) and, after some decades under the Austrian rule, of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.
Visit Valeggio sul Mincio’s official website: “Recognized “City of Art”, Valeggio is the place of complete vacation.

Val Senales Schnalstal Glacier Skiing November Ski & Snow Conditions

Val Senales, also called Schnalstal, is a side valley of the Vinschgau in the autonomous province of South Tyrol, Italy. The valley belongs almost in its entirety to the municipality of Schnals, while small parts in the entrance area lie in Naturns und Kastelbell-Tschars.
The Vernagt-Stausee reservoir is located in the valley. Braunes Bergschaf, a rare breed of domesticated sheep, is raised there.
In 1991, Ötzi, a well-preserved natural mummy from about 3300 BC, was found in the nearby Schnalstal glacier.
Skiing at the Val Senales Glacier is equally suitable for children and families as well as professionals.

For decades, the Hochjochferner glacier has been a training center for world-class athletes in both Alpine and cross-country skiing. Enthusiasts of ski touring will find ideal snow conditions, and cross-country skiers will be drawn to panoramic high altitude trails. Food lovers have a choice of five different mountain restaurants offering delicious traditional mountain dishes on sunny terraces.

The ski area offers a complete range of services, including a ski depot, ski rental, skiing lessons, hotels, and camping sites right next to the slopes. Thanks to the varied ticket options available at the Val Senales Glacier in South Tyrol, every visitor will find an offer to suit their budget and needs.

Visiting Lake Garda Malcesine Monte Baldo – Fabulous Outdoors

Lake Garda, is approximately 40 Kilometres in length, and is the largest lake in Italy.

It is a popular holiday location located in northern Italy, about halfway between Brescia and Verona, and between Venice and Milan on the edge of the Dolomites. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last Ice Age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the south-east), Brescia (south-west), and Trentino (north).

The name Garda, which the lake has been seen referred to in documents dating to the eighth century, comes from the town of the same name. It is the evolution of the Germanic word warda, meaning “place of guard” or “place of observation.”

A view from Monte Baldo by the Baita dei Forti refuge

The lake surrounded by mountains overlooking it, is ideal for most outdoor activities and it’s a dreamland for landscape photographers. The views are stunning and the constant breeze keeps the sky either very clear or very interesting.

A gloomy day in Malcesine

Some of the most popular outdoor sports activities here are sailing, windsurfing/kitesurfing, due to the thermal wind effect blowing regularly south in the morning, then switching directions in the afternoon, blowing back towards the north. Together with cycling, mountain biking, paragliding, rock climbing, the options are endless for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Some of the best skies are in Autumn – Fabulous Outdoors

Autumn is the season known for it’s fog and mist. However, quite often the thermal wind blows up and down the valleys, clearing up the sky and leaving as to beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

I’ll add to this post some more images, as now as I’m writing is just the beginning of that period of the year, by the alps of Italy.
